Anime Review – The Demon Prince of Momochi House (2024) Episodes 1-3

Have you ever watched a piece of media which has left you feeling disappointed as it could be so much more? For me, that statement perfectly describes The Demon Prince of Momochi House.
Based on a manga of the same name. The show follows Hirmari Momochi, on her 16th birthday she gets a letter stating she inherited a mansion called Momochi House. Which is famous for being a haunted house. Wanting to explore the only connection she has to her family, she decides to make the best of her new house.
Upon exploring the property, she discovers that the house is occupied by 3 guys, Aoi Nanamori, Ise and Yukari, who believe the house is theirs. In addition, they are also there to stop youkai. The reason they must stop them is the house sits between the realm of the living and the spirits.
This show was truly a disappointment in many ways. Episode 2 is a true waste of time adding nothing to the overall narrative. It felt like a filler episode, and it was only the 2nd episode. It even had a similar structure of Himari must leave the house because it is not safe, she thinks about it but then decides to stay. It’s repetitive and mundane. Which is frustrating when I enjoyed the general concept of the show.
I also found the animation to be lacking. Action scenes feel lifeless and have no momentum, they are also usually on a purple backdrop in a way to save on production costs. The only part of the animation that was nice was an Aoi Nanamori jacket that is super jazzy and filled with detail but in a way sticks out in a show with otherwise boring animation. I was legit nearly done with the show after episode 2.
But episode 3 is slowly turning me around. The overall mystery of the episode was intriguing and captivating. The seeds are being planted for the overarching narrative that is being told. There are also some interesting side characters being developed that I hope get more screen time.
The 3rd episode was the best out of the 3 that has currently aired but at the same time, I feel that is damning in faint praise. While I am not entirely won over by the show, it did enough to keep me watching to a degree. If the show does not pick up the pace by episode 6 I will drop the show. It won me over enough to give it a 2nd chance but not enough to recommend it.
