Brie Larson To Lead Fail-Safe For J.J. Abrams And Strange Darling Helmer

Oscar winner Brie Larson set for new horror film

Oscar Winner Brie Larson (Room) is set to star in a new “creature-feature” for producer J.J. Abrams in the form of Fail-Safe, reports Deadline today.

The new film is another hot property being marketed and sold at this year’s Cannes Film Festival market and is set to be the first notable big-screen appearance since the 2023 double whammy of The Marvels and Fast X.

Abrams is producing the film with JT Mollner, acclaimed director of last year’s excellent horror-thriller Strange Darling, helming from a script by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You). The movie is being described (via Deadline) as “a modern take on the creature horror film told from the perspective of a young boy who slowly begins to discover that his beloved parents are hiding a disturbing secret about his mother’s true nature.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Trek director Abrams added:  “With Fail-Safe, Brian Duffield has written an absolute powerhouse of a script. It’s a horror film that is as sweet and moving as it is terrifying. To have JT Mollner in the director’s chair — his Strange Darling blew me away — is a dream come true. Finally, having the limitlessly talented Brie Larson as our star sets up Fail-Safe to be that rare horror film that makes you laugh, feel, and care, before taking you on an absolutely wild ride.”

Larsen has been on the stage in the last year and there is still no official word on if she will reprise her role as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, or if the character will have another stand-alone film in the future. In addition, it still remains unclear if she will reprise her role as Tess Petty in Fast XI.
