Cannes Film Festival Announces It’s 2017 Line Up

70 years old, the grand lady of Film Festivals and this morning Cannes Film Festival has announced it’s 2017 line-up. Plenty of familiar faces returning as well as some new ones as next month all eyes in movie land will be focused on the year’s premiere film festival. Cannes as ever gives cinephiles worldwide the first glimpse of movies we can expect to see on our big screens (or small) in the next 12 months.

Next month the 70th Edition of Cannes will consist of 49 movies from 29 countries with 9 of the movies from first time features. One big notice will be the fact there are no movies from any of the big studios with Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk gained speculation it would premiere.Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 was another movie tipped but neither were read out this morning.However, some slots have still to be filled so don’t be shocked if one of these movies is added to the lineup

The festival this year will kick off with Arnaud Desplechin‘s Ismael’s Ghosts a relationship drama starring Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg.with Mathieu Amalric‘s Barbara kicking off the Un Certain Regard which includes Hell or High Water‘s writer Taylor Sheridan‘s Wind River a crime thriller starring Elizabeth Olsen, Jeremy Renner and Jon Bernthal.

In Competition will include Yorgos Lanthimos‘ The Killing of a Sacred Deer, starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell. If you can’t get enough of the pair they appear in Sofia Coppola‘s Gothic remake of Clint Eastwood’s 1971 movie, The Beguiled.Lyne Ramsay‘s soon to be finished sex trafficking drama You Were Never Really Here starring Joaquin Phoenix will play if off course is completed. Film Auteur Michael Haneke will return to the big screen with Happy End, he’ll be ed by Francois Ozon‘s with L’Amant Double, Oscar winner Michael Hazanavicius‘Le Redoubtable. Other interesting notables is Kristen Stewart‘s directorial debut Short film Come Swim will get a special screening.

As streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon tighten their grip on Movies and Television market, more and more shows are been showcased in film festivals. Bong Joon-Ho‘s Okja study of man’s relationship with animal and Noah Baumbach‘s The Meyrowitz Stories starring Adam Sandler. They will be ed by 2 television shows fans eagerly await, David Lynch‘s Twin Peaks and Jane Campion‘s Top Of The Lake.

As ever Cannes doesn’t disappoint but at the same time shocks with some controversial choices. It wouldn’t be a proper festival if it doesn’t. The line-up does have a big political streak to it covering many subjects which the filmmakers will be hoping it will open our eyes to take action or at least spark a debate. Pedro Almodovar will preside over this year’s jury with Monica Bellucci hosting.

2017 Cannes Film Festival will take place between 17th until 28th May.
