Garth Davis (Lion) promises this will be ‘The most authentic and human portrait of one of the world’s most misunderstood spiritual and historical figures’

When religion and cinema collide there is always going to be controversial especially how diverse religion is and everyone has their own vision of the story. It’s suffered from the ‘whitening’ of characters to the North American distributing rights at one time owned by the Weinsteins.

As for Mary herself, she was considered by some as merely been a ‘prostitute’ which Jesus baptised. After this, she followed him witnessing his crucifixion and resurrection. It’s also said some of the Apostles especially Peter was not comfortable with Mary or any women been around them, she was a ‘social movement’.

MARY MAGDALENE is an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.

Mary Magdalene will be released in the UK and Irish cinemas from 16th March 2018. Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim.
