Shudder Film Review - Revealer (2022)

An adult only Chicago book shop incorporating a peep show ‘out the backrooms’ is the workplace for amateur exotic performer Angie (Caito Aase) whom after an apocalyptic event, is forced to forces with Sally (Shaina Schrooten) her arch enemy fundamentalist preaching Christian previously waving a bible around the carpark.

Together they cherish being alive in the interest of avoiding an incoming demon determined to mind control the pair before absolute takeover to rule the world.

It’s as dumb as it sounds, a half-baked premise with underlying tonal shifts isn’t substantial, but still kind of works as entertaining exploitation.

Kitsch is welcomed, but doesn’t always mean aqueous, depends on the material around it and this ‘end of civilisation as we know it’ screenplay, from a story by director Luke Boyce, isn’t challenging or highly unique.

Retro clothes and musical inspirations make the 1980s vibe perceptible and the leads convey fun, love-hate chemistry. Caito Aase impresses throughout what could have been an empty role, making the realism of her occupation standout, especially in confrontations with bias establishment owner Ray (Bishop Stevens).

Shaina Schrooten shows huge potential, I have no doubt if given better material her ability will shine through.

With its horror heart in the right place, this Shudder original will at least keep gore fans mildly satisfied.
