The Vintage Collection Welcomes Jack Clayton’s Room At The Top

Vintage Classics Collection and will be available to own on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital from March.
Based on the best-selling novel by John Braine, Room At The Top is Clayton’s debut feature and is one of the earliest examples of the ‘Kitchen Sink Drama’ that helped pave the way for the incoming ‘British New Wave’ of film-makers. Featuring the first open reference to sex as well as the earliest depiction of adultery in a British film, it was a controversial film for the era and was initially refused a certificate by the censors before eventually securing an “X” certificate.
Starring Laurence Harvey (Women of Twilight, The Silent Enemy), Simone Signoret (Les Diaboliques), Heather Sears (The Story of Esther Costello, The Phantom of the Opera) and Donald Wolfit (Lawrence of Arabia, Beckett), the film went on to become a major box-office success and opened the floodgates for more adult orientated movies. The film also gained widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two: Best Actress (Signoret) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Paterson). At 2 minutes and 19 seconds, ing actress Hermione Baddeley‘s (Mary Poppins, Brighton Rock) performance is the shortest Oscar®-nominated performance in movie history.
“A Motion Picture So Frankly Physical…So Boldly Unashamed…We Recommend It to Adult Audiences Only!”
In post-war industrial Yorkshire, Joe Lampton (Lawrence Harvey) aims to seduce the boss’s daughter as he attempts to climb the corporate ladder at work. But when his background holds him back, Joe seeks comfort with the unhappily married Alice (Simone Signoret) beginning an affair that will have devastating consequences.
