When you really want to test your mettle and how good you are as an actor, how much you know of your chosen craft, going behind the lens is the best way. Many actors have proven they can deliver both sides of the camera and next month we will get to see Brady Corbet‘s directorial debut, The Childhood Of A Leader.

He may not be as well known as some of his acting peers Corbet has established himself a promising actor in independent film with the likes of Martha May Marcy Marlene, Simon Killer, Force Majeure (even lead villain in The Purge). Now he tackles a psycho drama with chilling, dark tone one that delves in horror, mystery of a rising dictator’s childhood, watch the chilling UK Trailer.

For a first time director this is a massive project to handle and Corbet himself itted that. A project he wanted to do over an decade ago he kept it close until the right moment arrived which is next month. Once again Robert Pattinson has distance himself once again from his Twihard days which won’t please them but a sign of his maturity and respect in acting. What also excites us is this film has a Scott Walker score which looks to give the film an atmospheric but terrifying dimension to the the tone.

In The Childhood Of A Leader,an American family settles into the French countryside at the end of the First World War, where the father (Liam Cunningham) is involved in the peace negotiations around the Treaty of Versailles. His wife (Berenice Bejo) is a devout Christian who struggles with the tantrums of their defiant young son, whose wilful outbursts begin to demonstrate a monster in the making.

Infused with the same sense of dread as The Others and The Omen, The Childhood of a Leader is an ominous portrait of emerging evil.

Our writer Andrew review The Childhood Of A Leader at the film’s UK premiere last month at Edinburgh Film Festival[read his review here], describing the film as ‘an unflinchingly powerful debut that delivers an unease that one rarely experiences on film. Directed with a foreboding dread and unsettled energy this is a watch like no other.’

The Childhood Of A Leader will get an UK&Irish cinema release on 19th August.
